Hospice Care

A hospice nurse sitting with a patient in his own living room, holding his hand.

Hospice care, at home.

Comfort for the patient, support for everyone who loves them.

An adult daughter sitting close to her mother in soft afternoon light.

What comfort care actually means

Comfort care is not a softer version of doing nothing. It is active clinical work with one goal: staying ahead of symptoms instead of chasing them.

Pain is dosed to prevent it rather than to rescue from it, which usually means less medication overall and far fewer bad hours. Breathlessness is treated with positioning, airflow, and medication that takes the panic out of it. Anxiety and sleeplessness are treated as seriously as anything physical, because nobody who has not slept in four days can enjoy anything about the day.

The goal is not sedation. The goal is being alert and comfortable enough to still be yourself with the people in the room.

What is covered, and what you pay.

Both halves of the question families ask first, answered in one place.

Covered by Medicare for eligible patients

  • 24/7 nurse access, with on-call and weekend teams
  • Skilled nursing for pain and symptom management
  • All diagnosis-related medications, supplies and equipment, delivered
  • Licensed social workers, and non-denominational spiritual support where your beliefs lead
  • Volunteer companionship, grief classes, and 13 months of grief support for the family

What your family pays

  • Nothing, when the patient is eligible and covered by Medicare or Medicaid
  • Nothing for the equipment, the supplies, or the deliveries
  • Private plans vary, so we verify your specific benefits before care begins
  • Room and board is not part of the hospice benefit. If your loved one lives in an assisted living or nursing facility, that cost continues
  • If a family is uninsured, we work to identify resources that close the gap
  • Nothing for the call that answers all of this, and no commitment attached

Hospice is a benefit, not a bill. For eligible patients Medicare and Medicaid cover hospice care, and we confirm exactly what your plan covers before care begins, so no part of the cost arrives as a surprise later.

Care that changes as needs change.

Most families stay at the first level the whole way. The others are there for the weeks that ask more.

Routine home care

Regular visits wherever you live. Most care happens here.

Continuous care

Bedside nursing up to 24 hours a day during a symptom crisis.

Inpatient care

Short-term care in a facility when symptoms cannot be managed at home.

Respite care

Up to five days so your family caregiver can rest.

Wherever home is

Home is the address you are already living at.

Most of our patients are in a house or an apartment. Many are in an assisted living community or a nursing facility, and hospice works there too.

Nothing about your routine has to change.

We come to you, and we coordinate with the facility staff rather than working around them. What changes is that a hospice nurse, aide, social worker and chaplain join the team looking after you.

A typical week

No two weeks look the same, but here is a common one.

Tuesday morning the nurse comes, checks how the last few days have gone, adjusts a dose, and stays long enough to answer the question your daughter has been carrying since Sunday. Wednesday and Friday the aide arrives to help with a bath and a shave, and leaves behind clean sheets and a man who feels like himself again.

The social worker calls midweek about the insurance letter nobody could decode. A volunteer drops off supplies on Thursday and stays forty minutes talking about the Diamondbacks.

And at two in the morning on Saturday, when the breathing changes and everyone in the house is frightened, the phone is answered by a nurse who already knows the chart.

An older couple sharing coffee and the newspaper at their kitchen table in the morning.

Questions about what is covered?

A nurse can walk you through it in a few minutes, at no cost and with no commitment.
