Day Break: dementia care.
Late-stage dementia care that supports the patient and the family carrying the load.
How Day Break helps
Signs Day Break may be right
Difficulty walking without help, speech down to a few words, trouble swallowing, repeated infections. Or a caregiver running on empty.
If any of that sounds familiar, we should talk.
How we connect when words are gone
Late-stage dementia takes language before it takes the person. Comfort then depends on reading what can no longer be said.
Our team watches the face and the body for pain: a furrowed brow, a hand that pulls away during a bath, restlessness that arrives at the same hour every afternoon. We use music from the right decade, because a song learned at twenty often lands when nothing else does. We use hand-over-hand touch. And we keep the routine and the faces consistent, because unfamiliarity is its own kind of pain.
We also meet her in whatever year she is living in. If it is 1974 and she is waiting for her husband to come home from work, we do not correct her. Correcting costs her the moment and gives nothing back.
For the caregiver carrying this
You have been doing this for years. You sleep in pieces. You grieve someone who is still in the next room, which is a grief nobody sends cards for. And when you think about accepting help, some part of you calls it giving up on her.
It is not. It is the thing that lets you be her daughter again instead of her nurse.
Here is what that looks like on an ordinary Wednesday: our aide handles the bath, and you sit beside her afterwards watching an old movie, holding her hand, with nothing to manage for an hour. That hour is not a small thing. For most families it is the first one they have had in months.
You are allowed to need this.
As things change
Swallowing gets harder. Infections come more often. Decisions arrive that nobody feels qualified to make in the middle of the night, about feeding, about antibiotics, about whether to go back to the hospital.
We walk through each of those with you before it becomes urgent, so that the choice gets made in daylight with a nurse on the phone, rather than alone in a hallway.
Let us carry some of it.
One phone call, and a nurse will talk it through with you honestly.
