Pediatric Palliative Care

A child's crayon drawing of their family, held on the refrigerator door with flower magnets.

When a child is seriously ill.

You do not have to choose between treating your child’s illness and keeping them comfortable. You can have both, starting today.

It runs alongside treatment. It does not replace it.

Pediatric palliative care simply means an extra layer of support: help with pain, with sleep, with eating, with worry, and with everything the illness asks of a family.

Your child keeps every appointment and keeps taking every medicine while we do this. Nothing about our involvement changes the treatment plan, or the hope behind it.

What changes, and what does not.

Parents ask us this first, so here is the whole answer in one place.

Stays exactly as it is

  • Your child’s treatment plan, written by the doctors who wrote it
  • Every appointment, every medicine, every scan
  • Your child’s specialists, still leading the care of the illness
  • The goal of a cure, and the hope behind it

What we add on top

  • Day to day relief from pain, poor sleep, low appetite and worry
  • A nurse who answers the phone, 24 hours a day
  • Honest answers for brothers and sisters, pitched at their age
  • Coordination between your child’s doctors, so you stop carrying messages between them

For adults, comfort focused care and curative treatment are usually an either-or decision. For children they are not. Federal law protects receiving both at once for children covered by Medicaid or CHIP, and we will show you exactly how it applies to your child’s coverage before you decide anything.

Who comes to help

A serious illness happens to a whole household rather than to one person in it.

Your child

Clinicians trained specifically in caring for children look after your child’s comfort, feelings and spirit, not only the illness on the chart.

Brothers and sisters

They notice everything and are told very little. We give them honest answers pitched at their age, and somewhere to put the feelings that come with those answers.

You

Practical help at home, and a team that answers the phone at any hour, so that a hard night does not have to be handled alone.

Start any day.

You can ask for this care the day of a diagnosis. There is no waiting period, and we will confirm what your child’s coverage supports before anything starts.

Stop any day.

You can stop whenever you want, for any reason, and stopping changes nothing about the treatment your child is receiving.

The first conversation

It is a conversation, not a commitment. You can ask us anything, including whether now is the right time and the questions you have not wanted to say out loud.

If we are not the right support for your child right now, we will tell you that plainly and point you to what is.

Talk with our pediatric team.

One phone call, and nothing is decided until you decide it.
